From London to Geneva, Paris and the famous stage of La Cigale, The 1001 Nuits shows have raised oriental dancing to the rank of art. Gemma managed to give oriental music a unique style, a clever mix of technique and grace. Through her choreographies, she offers a modern and rigorous version of this age old dance, far from the usual oriental clichés.
The exceptionnal and intense 1001 Nuits workshops give the opportunity for professionals or students alike to perfect their technique and learn about Gemma’s avant garde technique.
The workshops are directed by Gemma, Amina and Farah of the Mille et Une Nuits ensemble and by Djamel Mellouk, a professional percutionist, artistic director of the Mille et Une Nuits group, founder of the El Darbak ensemble and composer and author of the Alhambra and Mille et Une Nuits albums (SONY-BMG).

* Sagates : finger cymbals. Egyptian belly dancers’ favorite musical instrument. The Sagattes (or “small cymbals”) can be used to accompany any kind of dance, from the traditional egyptian balladi to the most modern musics and also percussion solos. Not many dancers master this difficult art nowadays.

** solo tabla : Percussion solos special : solo improv technique on the darbouka accompanied by Djamel Mellouk. Percussion solos, traditionally improvised and hence non choreographed, are ruled by strict laws that not many dancers have mastered. This is a unique opportunity for any student to work with a professional percutionist and to get inspired by his mastery of oriental rythmes.
